(CNN Spanish) — In the Pichincha Male Provisional Deprivation of Liberty Center No. 1, located in Quito, there were clashes between criminal gangs that left at least five inmates dead, informs the National Service for Comprehensive Care of Adult Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders. The situation is already under control, as reported by Víctor Herrera, commander of the Quito Police, in an interview with Ecuavisa, a CNN affiliate.
Due to the clashes, three inmates were injured and several security agents «beaten while trying to defuse the incidents.»
Since December 2020, more than 400 inmates have been killed in clashes between prisoners in different Ecuadorian prisons, according to figures from the SNAI and the Ministry of the Interior.
